On October 19, 2023, the Polytechnic Institute of Beja hosted a workshop as part of the CAPSI2023 event, aimed at exploring the role of open data in promoting city resilience. The session, centered on discussions about the European ERASMUS+ projects CRISIS and OpenDCO, gathered various professionals, academics, and interested participants to understand how open data can be utilized as a strategic resource to address contemporary urban challenges. With a special focus on resilience, the workshop highlighted the importance of tools and practices that enable cities to adapt and thrive in the face of crises.

During the workshop, participants discussed how open data has become essential for innovation and cities’ responsiveness to adverse events. Representatives from the CRISIS and OpenDCO projects shared insights on open data initiatives that facilitate the collection, analysis, and dissemination of critical information for informed decision-making. By making this data accessible and transparent, cities not only foster a culture of transparency but also strengthen cross-sector cooperation and enable quicker responses to emergencies.

The event also covered the role of open data professionals and resilience managers, who are crucial in implementing these initiatives. Practical experiences and testimonials were shared by participants from the MOOC CRISIS, as well as by municipal professionals present, who highlighted the challenges and opportunities encountered in using open data to enhance urban resilience. This exchange of experiences provided valuable insights into how different cities are integrating open data into their resilience policies.

Throughout the session, it was emphasized that open data is not merely a technological tool but a strategic component that helps anticipate risks, allocate resources efficiently, and improve the quality of life in urban areas. The use of open data platforms allows real-time information on infrastructure, environmental conditions, and population dynamics to be accessible to authorities and the public alike, contributing to a more effective and collaborative response in crisis situations.

This workshop provided a learning and knowledge-sharing space on the use of open data for city resilience, demonstrating how this practice is essential for addressing urban challenges of the present and future.
